Trails at the Hermitage

Five trails have been laid out with blazes on the trees:

--Green: an easy stroller-accessible 0.3 mile loop walk. Roots and branches on the trail make it unsuitable for wheelchairs. About 18 different species occur along or near this trail. They are described in a TREE WALK web page [in progress].

--Blue: a 0.1 mile woodland spur to a viewpoint over the marsh containing primarily viburnum, spicebush, and American holly bushes.

--Red: 0.8 mile, a natural loop trail through forest to the Jack Markell trail/bike path and back. Near the bike path is a very tall tall pin oak, probably not the tallest in Delaware, but not by much.

- White: a 2.4 miles long loop running trail created for the Carrie Downie run club. It runs along portions of the green and red trail. The portion near the marsh is unusable after wet weather.

--Pink: An easy 0.25m loop trail primarily for use by students of the adjacent Carrie Downie Elementary School.
